BAD TASTE IN BOYS by Carrie Harris
Someone's been a very bad zombie.
Kate Grable is horrified to find out that the football coach has given the team steroids. Worse yet, the steroids are having an unexpected effect, turning hot gridiron hunks into mindless flesh-eating zombies. No one is safe--not her cute crush Aaron, not her dorky brother, Jonah . . . not even Kate!
She's got to find an antidote--before her entire high school ends up eating each other. So Kate, her best girlfriend, Rocky, and Aaron stage a frantic battle to save their town. . . and stay hormonally human.
The summary of this book gives you a hint about what to expect--you get a sense of the voice, and you probably have an idea that the book is humorous. But what you don't get from the summary is how truly brilliant the book is. Harris' zombies are not like any kind of zombie you've experienced before. Well, okay, they are. They eat people and they have limbs coming off and stuff. But it's not a scary book. Creepy, yes. And there are definitely moments of tension. But it's so freaking funny. Like, holy-crapola-no-freaking-way-did-she-just-say-that kind of funny.
BAD TASTE IN BOYS doesn't take itself very seriously. It's kind of a zombie spoof with a kickass story and a voice that takes the cake. Kate Grable is a nearly-reformed geek with razor sharp wit. She's hilarious, whether she's poking fun at the numbskulls in her school or herself. Scenes that would otherwise be terrifying (hello, attack of the zombified football team) have you cracking up as she stops to remark about the absurdity of the situation (hello, appendages falling off)--much in the same way audiences might comment when they're watching zombie movies.
But BAD TASTE IN BOYS does more than just make you laugh. You get a dash of romance, which is sweet and touching--and also funny, given that Kate is using the zombification as an opportunity to hook up with her quarterback crush. There's a real softness to the book too in Kate's relationship with her brother--there's more to lose than just herself. And somehow, Harris pulls off zombies in a school setting. I must admit at first I was dubious. How does one continue to go to school when there are zombies running around? But it all just comes together. In one book you get epileptic seizures, cheerleaders, science experiments, homecoming, puke that smells like something truly...original, and zombies.
Nice guys are good to take home to Mama. But everyone knows you get your kicks from bad zombies. BAD TASTE IN BOYS is great fun and truly unforgettable.

But first, Book 2...
by Rosemary Clement-Moore
Summary: Amy Goodnight's family is far from normal. She comes from a line of witches, but tries her best to stay far outside the family business. Her summer gig? Ranch-sitting for her aunt with her wacky but beautiful sister. Only the Goodnight Ranch is even less normal than it normally is. Bodies are being discovered, a ghost is on the prowl, and everywhere she turns, the hot neighbor cowboy is in her face.
The best books for me tend to be the ones that are not so easily classified, ones that don't have an obvious location on the bookstore bookshelf. TEXAS GOTHIC is one of these. It's a YA romance...and a mystery...and a paranormal...with supernatural elements...and freaking hilarious. It seems like a lot to invest in one story, but Clement-Moore pulls it off well.
Amy is the kind of character we all wish we could be like--intelligent, independent, strong, and remarkably witty. But Amy is flawed, too: headstrong and sometimes foolish. Young, really. The flaws make her feel genuine and relatable. She gets into some gorgeous scrapes which made me wonder why in the world I wasn't packing up and moving to Texas to surround myself with hot cowboys.
The romance in this is hot. Beautiful tension with a nice build-up. Amy resists her cowboy at nearly every turn, much in the same way that she resists her heritage as a witch and her special ability. She's the quintessential resistor, which adds an element of friction to a situation that is already complicated. You know, bodies and ghosts and people getting hurt and all sorts of spooky stuff happening. There are two kinds of creepy in this--the Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter creepy, and the Zuul from Ghostbusters creepy. The first is charming and will have you laughing, and the latter will have you whipping through the pages. But TEXAS GOTHIC is not so terrifying you'll be lying in the dark after you finish reading, jumping at every sound. It's the kind of scary you can safely read before bedtime...
TEXAS GOTHIC is a fun romance with beautiful writing: a vivid setting, snappy wit and clever turns of phrase. It's also a spooky page-turner, which combines the paranormal with the supernatural in an original way. Above all, it's an entertaining, memorable read.
